The "Japan Logistics Award" is a consolidation of two award systems previously implemented by the Japan Logistics Association: the "Logistics Environment Award" and the "Modal Shift Excellent Business Award." It recognizes the achievements of companies and organizations that aim for sustainable logistics through the realization of carbon neutrality and productivity improvement.
The initiative that received the "Japan Logistics Award Special Prize" this time is a system that collects and recycles used stretch film, which Kurabe Co., Ltd. had been treating as industrial waste, instead of discarding it, and regenerates it into "recycled stretch film," creating a circular economy—a system known as "horizontal recycling of stretch film." Used stretch film is collected along with existing cardboard collection, and Pantech processes it into pellets to remanufacture it as recycled stretch film. Kurabe Co., Ltd. then buys it back from Toyota Tsusho Co., Ltd. Through the establishment and operation of this resource-recycling scheme, the amount of used stretch film discarded has been reduced by 95.5%, and CO₂ emissions have been reduced by 33.55 tons.
This award recognizes not only the environmental benefits resulting from the revised waste disposal methods, but also the fact that the system is sustainable from an economic standpoint by converting waste into valuable resources.
